The project was possible thanks to the generous donations from Rosemary Warburg and her late husband Michael Warburg (Balliol 1949), Richard Gillis (Balliol 1977) and Carolyn Gillis.
The etch team were appointed in collaboration with Penwarden Hale Architects to deliver this wonderful refurbishment project of the College’s previously down at heel music centre & lecture theatre space.
As the building is listed, a robust listed building consent application was necessary as well as extensive engagement with the Conservation Team at Oxford City Council.
Built in 1966 and formerly known as the Burnard Sunley building the spaces functioned relatively well but were decoratively poor and within the music room, no longer weather tight and so not fit for purpose. The project outcome demonstrated a considered design which responded to the needs of the College as well as issues raised by the pre-application advice received from Oxford City Council.
As custodians of the Bernard Sunley building, the College’s primary drivers were to carefully restore, adapt and enhance elements of existing 1960’s fabric, to provide facilities that celebrate the design principles of the Oxford Architects original design and improve the enjoyment and usage of the building for students and staff alike.
